Scotia is a beloved DJ and producer on the American rave scene. Both her DJ sets and original music center a blisteringly unique acid sound that is informed by the language of Proto-House, Electro, and 80s Freestyle. Hailing from Upstate New York, her sets have been rapturously received at parties across the US, including Return to the Source, The Bunker, I Love Acid, The Carry Nation, and Wrecked. Her records have appeared on imprints like The Bunker, Delft, Chinotto, and Acid Camp.

1. Frances - Surrender Your Love
It's 80s freestyle summer! I just got back from Honcho and there was a strong current of freestyle between me, Jeffrey Sfire, and Mike Servito's sets. I’m a lifelong freestyle girl. This one has it all: a stunning combination of 808, 707, and 727; orchestra hits; punchy bass line; and an aching vocal. This one goes for a decent sum on discogs – it’s worth every penny! 

2. Atrevido - Feel It Out (Steffi Remix)
Atrevido is an incredible DJ from San Diego with very deep crates that I befriended at the Ever Afters Campout last year outside SF. This whole record is quite fascinating – this Steffi remix fits really well into my sets – very minimal, it pumps just right, the vocal chops are delicious, and it has these pads that are perfectly hypnotic. It just rolls along so delightfully.

3. Andy Toth - Mind Lock
Interdimensional Transmissions never misses, nor does Andy Toth, going all the way back to Detroit Grand Pubahs. I never met Andy, but we have a mutual friend in common who is on a bowling team with him, and I'd quite like to meet him someday, because his drum and synth voices are always so impossibly crisp. This track sounds like it comes from the belly of the Earth, eternal. The best part about it is that it samples Senator Clay Davis from the Wire: "sheeeeit”!

4. Pass the Water - Kill Your Ghost
Italians do it better! This is a true freaker acid techno jam from the Italian 90s label Sysmo. I got it on discogs from someone in Italy – "The Venom EP" – bad ass name. Utterly frenetic and simple – an 808, 303, and some weird samples. The whole record is bizarre and great, but I love how this one has real trickster energy, you can feel it dancing around every nook of your brain.

5. Mystery Friend - Dance
Mystery Friend is an Argentinian jack master I have become so taken by. This one is out on the great digital label Non Stop Rhythm out of the UK. It essentially samples Mike Dunn's "Dance You Mutha" over and over again, in a bunch of different pitches, with a torrent of jacking drums and a simple repeating bassline. I love how it is somehow both minimal and maximal at the same time. People lose their minds over this.
